Due to the ongoing and evolving "LOCKDOWN" situation in place since early 2020, we are anticipating a small delay in processing of orders and subsequent shipping due to a reduced workforce, in both our warehouses, and those of our suppliers.

Whilst we are trying our best to continue in a business as usual, we must again close our retail showroom doors temporarily to support the Governments COVID19 Strategy. Throughout this temporary closure we will still be shipping items from our warehouses and those of our suppliers, but it may at times be subject to a small delay.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Hi do you have mounting instructions for the echomax 230br plz

The following is from the manufacturer's website:

    Ships wheel mark.jpg

Restyled case with fixing centres of 545mm, being direct replacement for the Firdell Blipper 210-7 utilising existing bracket installation on mast. Same response as the EM230 above.

Now available with brown PE case for classic boat owners.

    • Diameter 245mm

    • fixing centres 545mm

    • Height 595mm

    • Wt 2.3kgs

    Down load Declaration of Conformity

Both models are available in white, yellow, orange, red, green and black. Black cases are not covered by the Ships Wheel.

In 2003 ECHOMAX obtained EU Marine equipment Directive (MED) (Wheel Mark) - SOLAS certification for the EM230/230BR - EM305PE based on ISO 8729-1997.

The adoption of IMO MSC.164 (78) in May 2004 resulted in new ISO standards being generated; ISO8729-1 (passive) and ISO8729-2 (Active) later becoming effective from 23rd July 2009. In accordance with the Directive we were required to remove the Ships Wheel Mark from our rotational tooling, products, literature, website etc.

Since no commercial passive reflector within the 0.5m3 and 5kg limitations will meet ISO 8729-1 this left a void in the market for the last three years causing both confusion and uncertainty regarding which reflector can be fitted to lifeboats, rescue craft etc.

In August 2012 the EU COSS (Committee on Safe Seas and the Prevention of Pollution from Ships), the arbitrators for the MED, met to debate, amongst other subjects, the lack of available product to meet the requirements for a “radar reflector for lifeboats and rescue boats” (Directive Annex A1/1.33). For practical purpose this SOLAS requirement can only be fulfilled by a Passive device, and none are available!

As a result COSS reinstated the old ISO-8729-1997 for lifeboats and rescue craft, ONLY until such time as a passive reflector becomes available which meets ISO8729-1.

We have since re-gained our Ships Wheel Mark for our EM230/230BR and the BABT -TUV Module B and D certificates and Certificate of Conformity are available for inspection if required.

Uncertainty still exists for RTE’s, now in Annex A1 (A.1/4.53) as our Active-XS exceeds the ISO8729-2 and we have the option of applying for a Ships Wheel Mark at a mere £15K+. However the MCA will not state what vessels, if any, must fit such a device making it impossible to invest so much without any guarantee of a return.

A QinetiQ Opinion that our Active-XS meets ISO 8729-2 is available for inspection

    Mounting options:

    Sailing Yachts - Halyard Mount

Echomax reflectors use a symmetrical arrangement of interacting corners. Whilst its centreband response pattern is maintained at 15° tilt RCS is -5dB. To counter this, and avoid 'mast shadow'.

Pass a bight over the yardarm via a dead eye. Return bight through reflectors eye and secure taking lines through bight. Take tails through reflectors bottom eye and then to separate cleats via loops at --xx--.

Yachtsmen will be aware of the need to trim the reflector when on the reverse tack, failure to do so will result in compounding the angle of heel rendering the reflector inefficient.

Note: Reflector trimmed to leeward 15°. Mast heeling to 30°

    Halyard mounting1.JPG

Echomax may be fitted in any position around the mast (i.e fore or aft).

Hypothetical figures on mast shadow may be viewed                  .

Utilising Echomax stainless steel mast brackets (available separately) fit reflector as high as possible on the mast, using Monel or stainless steel rivets (3/16 x 1/2" 4.8 x 12.7mm). To avoid electrolytic action use zinc chromate paste between bracket and mast or closed cell foam tape. Firstly fix top bracket to mast in the required position, measure distance vertically between centres, mark position of lower bracket then drill and fix. Use two stainless steel hexagonal bolts 8mm dia x 30mm long to fix Echomax to the mounting brackets

There are deck brackets available separately for both the EM230 and the EM230BR
